Bytefall — A Gallery Cleaner for Android & iOS
Bytefall: Gallery Manager goes through your photo library and shows what is actually taking up the space — with the real number, measured after the scan. Cleaner apps tend to promise gigabytes before they have counted anything; Bytefall claims nothing until it has been measured. An in-house project by Designer 2 j.d.o.o. — from the idea and the design through the native scanners for Android and iOS to release on Google Play and Apple's App Store.
Everything happens on the phone. There is no account and no sign-in, and photos are read, compared and deleted entirely on the device — there is no server behind the app to upload them to. Nothing is deleted until you confirm: everything you mark goes to a bin first, and the bin survives closing the app.
- Exact duplicates — byte-for-byte identical copies of the same file
- Similar shots — the burst of eight where you only wanted one
- Screenshots — older than 7, 15, 30, 60 or 90 days, or all of them
- Images saved by messaging apps — WhatsApp, Viber, Telegram, Messenger, Signal and others
- Large videos — the handful of files that quietly hold most of your storage
- Out-of-focus photos — optional, and off until you turn it on
- Three ways to review: Quick Sweep (one screen, the safe categories, one decision), duplicate sets with a suggested keeper, and swipe or a grid with checkboxes
- Storage Truth — free space now and afterwards, read from the device; a photo that is both a duplicate and a large file is counted once
- Favourites, anything from the last seven days and any source you exclude are left alone
- Free, with one full-screen ad when a scan finishes — never over the grid, the swipe deck or the bin, where a stray tap would cost a photograph; a single purchase removes it for good
I ran the whole cycle on this one myself: the specification and market research, the visual identity and the HUD interface, the native gallery scanners for Android and iOS, the bin and deletion through the system dialogs, the ad, European consent and one-time purchase integration, the photo access declarations, the screenshots and copy for both stores, the promo video, and finally the release and follow-up on Google Play and the App Store.
Technologies: Interface — React 19, TypeScript and Vite, packaged with Capacitor 8 for both platforms, set in Public Sans and JetBrains Mono. A six-stage scan: SHA-256 for exact duplicates, a perceptual hash over thumbnails for similar shots and Laplacian variance for blur. Android — native Kotlin plugins over MediaStore, scanning in a foreground service, a hash cache, a home-screen widget, Google Play Billing 8, Google Mobile Ads (AdMob) and UMP, minSdk 30 / targetSdk 36. iOS — native Swift plugins over PhotoKit, CryptoKit, SQLite, StoreKit 2, Google Mobile Ads, UMP and App Tracking Transparency, iOS 15+.
